Soto is a surname of Spanish origins commonly thought to refer to one who lived near or in a forest or grove of trees, or possibly a swamp. From the Spanish Soto meaning "grove" or "small wood."

Soto’s family history dates back to the Castile area in north-central Spain, with many famous explorers to the New World (Antonio in 1513, Hernando in 1514 who sailed with Pizarro, Sebastian in 1515, Pedro in 1534, and Diego de Soto in 1538 to Florida) as well.

The Soto family name was found in the USA, the UK, Canada, and Scotland between 1840 and 1920. Most Soto families were found in the USA in 1920. In 1840 there was the first Soto family living in Alabama. This was about 50% of all the recorded Soto's in the USA.
